MA1 rough draft

  • My project responds to prompt 2, “shitty first drafts advice column”
  • I believe I’m over halfway through the drafting process, it could be finished but I’m unsure of the specific outlines of the paper, how long it needs to be, perspectives, formatting, etc.
  • I am somewhat happy with my project but if I knew more details I would be happier
  • I would like direct feedback on how realistic the column is and if I need to add more detailed personal examples, etc.
  • Any feedback is welcomed!

I think the column feels realistic, especially the part about staring at a blank page. That is something a lot of students can relate to, and your advice feels useful.

I think adding one specific personal example would make your advice stronger. It would help show how you have actually used the advice yourself.

The first two entries feel a little similar. I think separating one into getting started and the other into not worrying about perfection would make each one stand out more.

I really enjoyed reading your composition. It almost read like a script, which made the dialogue and banter entertaining. My main suggestion would be to keep the characters’ names consistent. At one point, I even went back to see if there were three characters instead of two. I also enjoyed the sarcasm of the advice columnist, although some readers may prefer a more supportive tone when seeking advice. Overall, I thought the humor and creativity made your composition enjoyable.

Your thesis statement left me wanting to know more about what the reader should take away from the context. I have found that the main points introduced in the thesis are often revisited in the conclusion. This helps reinforce the key ideas for the reader and provides a clear checkpoint to ensure that all of the intended points have been addressed throughout the composition.

I suggest checking the sequence of your main points. Once identifying the key points in your thesis statement, I recommend presenting them in the same order throughout your context and conclusion. As I read your thesis, the key elements appear to be lack of ideas, perfectionism, and distraction. Focusing on these three points consistently from the introduction, through the supporting context, and into the conclusion could provide a clearer structure and make your overall message easier to follow.

I think your main idea about getting past writer’s block is very clear. I like that you focus on actually getting something written instead of waiting for the perfect idea. Your advice feels realistic because you also explain that you have experienced this yourself.

I think the advice column format works really well for this topic because you are able to address several different problems writers might have. The different situations, like being stuck, being a perfectionist, and being distracted, make the advice relatable. You could maybe connect the different sections even more by showing how they all relate to the overall idea of just allowing yourself to write.

Your project seems especially helpful for people who struggle with starting or finishing their writing. I think adding one more specific example of something a writer could do when they are stuck could make your advice even more useful. For example, you could explain a quick activity someone could use to get their first ideas onto the page.

I like how you included different problems that writers can experience, especially struggling to start and trying to make the first draft perfect. One thing you could add is an example of a brainstorming strategy, like making a list or freewriting for a few minutes before starting.

I like how you give different examples of writer’s block and ways to deal with it. I really liked the part about just starting to write because sometimes people try too hard to make the first sentence perfect. I think you could make this part better by adding a personal example of a time when you had writers block.

I also liked the part about getting distracted because I think a lot of students can relate to that. You could add a few more ways to stay focused, like putting your phone away, setting a timer, or taking a little break to clear your head. I think giving people more ideas would make your advice even more helpful.

I think adding some personal examples would make the advice connect more with the audience. I don’t think you need one for every response, but I think a couple of examples that highlight your own experiences and what helped you through it would make it feel less general.

Like I said before, I suggest connecting with your audience a little more. Your column makes your advice approachable, but I think adding why your advice would work in a student’s day-to-day life would make everything stronger. Instead of simply listing what one should do, give a realistic example of how they can use the advice.

I like how you focused on problems that a lot of writer’s experience. For the first advice section, you could add a few specific brainstorming techniques, such as freewriting, making a list, or creating an outline. This could give the reader more options when they don’t know how to start.

I really like your point about not expecting the first draft to be perfect. You could develop this idea by explaining what someone should do after they finish their rough draft, such as taking a break and coming back later to revise their ideas.

I like how it is formatted but as others said, I believe personal examples really take things a long way.
